This photo was taken near Vieng Yonok, a mini-resort at Chiang Saen Lake. Chiang Saen is a district in the northern part of Chiang Rai, on the Mekong River. The town was built in the year 545 in an area called Yonok, by Tai migrants from Yunnan, China. Over the years, the town was passed back and forth between Siam and Burma, and was finally returned and remained in Thai control in 1804.
Chiang Saen is an interesting little town dotted with ancient ruins. Other points of interest include the National Museum, temples, and Chiang Saen Lake (where this photo was taken).
For the avid birdwatchers, Chiang Saen Wetlands/Lake is teamed with bird life, particularly in November and December. According to the Yonok Wetlands Project, Chiang Saen Lake is home to the largest Harrier roost in Thailand, largest known roost of Pied Harrier and Eastern Marsh in the world! Birding tours are available in the area.
