Wat Umong is not just famous for its’ tunnels, which were thought to have been built to keep a 14th Century slightly eccentric monk from wandering away into the jungle. Temple is set in a large natural forest setting, making it a wonderfully tranquil place to relax or explore.
Try to find the moss-overgrown, old buddha statues (above photo) and buddha parts sent here from various temples. Locals also bring their own buddha (and other) figures to leave here.
The chedi (stupa) of the temple is set on a large man-made mound above the tunnels.
It’s also fascinating to see all the ancient statues and artifacts around this leafy temple and words of wisdom amongst the trees (you’ll see it when you get there!).
It’s definitely worth visiting Wat Umong while you are in Chiang Mai, even if you are feeling “templed” out, I’m sure you’ll find this place interesting, especially if you love to be amongst nature.
