Weather in Chiang Mai
Cool Season
December to February is the “cool” season. The daytime temperature is fairly comfortable with the maximum temperature around 25°C/78°F, but can get up to 30°C/83°F. At night, the weather is cooler, and can drop to near freezing in the mountains. The days are clear. This is the most popular season for travellers.
Hot Season
February to May is considered “hot” season, and the temperature can get up to 35°C /88°F. The end of March can be quite warm, and there tend to a lot of haze due to the slash and burn agricultural practises. April brings short storms that help to cool and clear the air, and by May, the rain arrives.
Rainy Season
May to November is the “rainy” or “green” season. Normally, the sky is clear in the mornings, and cloudy in the afternoons. Don’t let the rain put you off travelling to Chiang Mai during this period though. The rain usually come in short bursts of in the afternoon or early evenings, and usually only last an hour or so (not the whole day). This is also a good time to come because the landscape is beautifully green, there are not as many other tourists around, and accommodation prices are usually cheaper.(Please note the official “High” season starts in November). The average maximum temperature during this period is around 31°C/84°F.
